Session 5: Let's learn a rock song! 

This session is aimed for students to learn a new song from the 80's and also learn how to sing it in English. 

Description of the activities:

Objectives of the session:

  • Learn the song No Controles by Olé Olé

  • Talk a little bit about the meaning. 

​

  • Translate two verses of the song into English.

​

  • Sing the new translated song

Activity 1: Each student will be given the lyrics of the song. As a class along with the teacher they will read the song, listen to it and talk a little bit about the meaning of the lyrics they just read.

The song has a rebel meaning and it is a great opportunity to reflect on some values like self-identity, personal choices and criticism.

              Class organization: Whole class

              Timing:   20 minutes

Activity 2: After the song has been discussed the students are gathered into heterogeneous groups to develop the translation activity. Before starting, the teacher will explain that the aim is to translate the sing using words and sentences that at the end, fit with the music. Each group has one of the two verses selected by the teacher and they have to translate them as best as they can. All the groups will have a computer to look up anything they need using online dictionaries and even google translate or other translation websites.

The aim is not to simply translate the song but for the students to understand that the lyrics need to fit with the music being played.

              Class organization: Small groups

​

              Timing:  20 minutes

Activity 3:  After all groups have acquired a translation, all together as a class the teacher guides a little discussion about the lyrics chosen by the groups and sings the different possibilities to see if they fit into the music. After that, she can propose wer option if the groups did not arrive to a complete translation. Giving the proper explanations about how she did it and why she selected the words she did.

She can explain about the patterns followed to create a complete translation. 

​

Also if there is enough time, the teacher can put a karaoke version of the song in order to sing it all together in English.

              Timing:  20 minutes

At the end of this activity, the students will have a dossier about carnival.

​

Materials:

​

  • The lyrics of the song "No Controles" by Olé, Olé in Spanish.

  • A verse to translate. 

  • The final lyrics of the song translated. 

  • Computers.

  • A cover to finish the dossier. 

  • The videoclip of No Controles from Olé Olé.

  • A karaoke video to sing the new lyrics.

Assessment: The translation of the song will not be something used as an assessment tool as the aim of it is that they understand why the lyrics and the music needs to fit. What will be assessed, then, is that comprehension that they can show during the final discussion. Also, as they are translating, the teacher will go group after group observing and listening in order to see if they understood the concept.  Also, as they work as a group their motivaion and predisposition towards the activity. How they interact with the other members of the group and with the teacher during the discussion.

Attention to diversity: The groups will be heterogeneous made by the teacher, also, as they will have computers it is easier for them to develop the activity.
