Session 3: Let's Calculate when Carnival is happening 

This session is the opportunity for students to use a tool that is not common for them, the moon calendar. 

Description of the activities:

Objectives of the session:

  • Learn what the moon calendar is.

​

  • Watch a video with the instructions on how to use the moon calendar and calculate carnival’s date.

​

  • Calculate the Carnival’s date for the years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

​

  • Write a letter to the headmaster communicating him the perfect date for Carnival on the years mentioned before.

Activity 1: Following with the tale they read two sessions ago. The teacher, with the help of the students, will do a brief summary about the story they read and how Mr. Carnival counted the moons in order to place his special day and how he did that every single year.

              Class organization: Whole class

              Timing:  5 minutes

Activity 2: What is a moon calendar? Little discussion and explanation about what a moon calendar is and its functions.

​

              Class organization: Whole class

​

              Timing:   10 minutes

Activity 3:  Visualization of the explanatory video about the moon calendar.

​

The video can be watched two times in the digital screen and then, provide computers for the students to rewatch the video as many times as needed.

              Timing:  5 minutes

​

Activity 4:  Each students will be given a worksheet, a regular calendar and a moon calendar  from the years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023.

 

With this worksheet they have to, first, calculate the Carnival’s date with the moon calendar for 2018.

When the calculation for the year 2018 is done they have to continue calculating the dates for the next 4 years.

To be able to see the different years, and not print all of them, students will have computers with an specific web page

              Timing:  45 minutes

​

Activity 5: As a class we will dedicate around 10 minutes to check the answers given by each group.

             Class organization:  Whole class

              Timing:  10 minutes

Activity 4:  All together, we will write an e-mail for the headmaster letting him know when the carnival dates will happen for the following years.

              Timing:  15 minutes

Materials:

​

  • Video explanation on how to use the moon calendar

​

  • Worksheet including the instructions written in English and pictures to provide visual support.

​

  • A moon calendar for each group (The different calendars for each year will be available thanks to this web page).

​

  • A tablet or computer. 

​

​

​

Assessment: The calculation of the exact date will be the assessment activity. Also it will be taken into account the motivation and predisposition while doing the activity. 

​

Attention to diversity: Students will be grouped in heterogeneous groups made beforehand.

They will be provided with visual support to understand completely the meaning of the instructions.

The students will be provided with the tablets not only to use the moon calendar but to watch the instructions' video as many times as they need.
