Session 1: Let's meet Mr. Carnival 

Session number 1 is an introductory session for the teaching session for the topic of Carnival in the school. 

Description of the activities:

Objectives of the session:

  • To read about Mr. Carnival’s adventures.

​

  • To understand the tale.

​

  • To learn about Carnival’s history and how is it celebrated around the world.

​

  • To complete the ending of the tale.

Activity 1: Introductory conversation on Carnival.

​

Questions that could be used to develop the discussion:  

​

“Do you know that carnival is near?”

​

“Do you celebrate Carnival in this school?”

​

“Do you remember the topic the school choose for carnival?”

​

“Would you like to create a little accessory for the costume with me during the arts and crafts hour?”

​

              Class organization: Whole class

​

              Timing:  5 minutes

Activity 2: Introduce Mr. Carnival as a human character who lives adventures that they are going to discover within the tale, using the Canva to to do.

​

              Class organization: Whole class

​

              Timing:  3 minutes

Activity 3:  Read the first paragraph of the tale following with the Canva’s presentation. And answer one questions to check understanding. After they have 2 or 3 minutes to read the question and answer it. The whole class will correct the answer.

​

Question: What does Mr. Carnival need to become a king?

​

  1. To travel the world. b) To marry a princess. c) To work very hard as a doctor.

​

              Timing:  15 minutes

​

Activity 3.1:  Read the following 3 paragraphs and answer a small question to make sure students are understanding the tale and what is being explained. After answering the questions the class will correct the answer. .

 

Question: Why did Mr. Carnival did not find a wife?

 

  2. Because he was poor. b) Because he got distracted partying c) He never looked for a wife.

             Class organization:  Reading (whole class), answering the   

questions (table groups), correcting the answers (whole class)

​

              Timing:   20minutes

​

Activity 3.2: Finish the 4 last paragraphs (not including the two possible endings) and answer a question to check their understanding. After that, they correct the answer.

​

Question: Which material did Mr. Carnival use to set the perfect date?

​

 3. a) A calculator. b) A moon calendar. c) a regular calendar.

​

             Class organization:  Reading (whole class), answering the   

questions (table groups), correcting the answers (whole class)

​

              Timing:  20minutes

Activity 4:  The whole class will read the three possible endings all together, using, again, the canva to help with the students’ understanding.

After that reading out loud is finished, with their table groups they will have to discuss and choose the ending they prefer.

​

​

              Timing:  20 minutes

 

Activity 5: Final decision. Each group will tell the rest of the class which ending they like and, at the end, as a class, they will have the final preferred ending.

Materials

  • Mr. Carnival story that will include a glossary  (to see the tale and the glossary click HERE)

Assessment:

​

  1. Showing that they have understood the different endings provided.

  2. The participation among them.

  3. How they communicate when having to choose the preferred ending.

  4. The interest shown.

​

​

Attention to diversity:First of all the groups will be divided into heterogeneous groups made beforehand.

​

While the story is being read, kids will have a glossary to help them understand some difficult words.

​

Also, the students will have projected some pictures and a map to see what places we are talking about in the tale.
